A Russian soldier has pleaded guilty to murder on Wednesday in Ukraine’s first war crimes trial since the start of the Russian invasion.
Vadim Shishimarin, 21, is charged with murder in the death of a 62-year-old unarmed civilian on February 28, just four days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. Shishimarin testified that he shot at the civilian only on the orders of a chief. He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
“I was ordered to shoot,” Shishimarin said of the incident. “I shot one [round] to him. He falls. And we moved on. “

Kremlin officials said they had no information about the process in a statement Wednesday. Ukraine held a preliminary hearing in Shishimarin’s case for the first time on Friday.
“We still have no information,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told AFP. “” And the possibility of providing assistance due to the lack of our diplomatic mission there is also very limited. “

President Joe Biden and other world leaders have called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stand trial for war crimes for Russia’s behavior in the invasion.
The allegations reached a boiling point when Russian forces hastily withdrew from around Kyiv last month, leaving behind evidence that they had killed civilians and forced others to dig mass graves in the city of Bucha.
Ukraine has not yet started a process directly related to the atrocities in Bucha.
