In the Donetsk and Luhansk districts alone, 2,070 people died and 2,256 were injured.

The office noted that most civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide range of impact, including heavy artillery shelling and rocket-propelled grenade launchers and missile and air strikes.

He also said he believed the actual figures were significantly higher due to delayed and pending information and reports.

So far, 6,312,255 refugees have fled Ukraine since the February 24 attack.

This is a total of about 14% of the country’s pre-war population of 44 million.

Most of the refugees displaced by the war are women and children, marking the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

Also Wednesday, Russia said its military had destroyed several artillery pieces delivered by the United States to Ukraine, although allegations by Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov could not be verified independently.

Konashenkov also said nearly 1,000 soldiers had left the last Mariupol fortress this week.

The defenders of Mariupol stayed for months at the steel factory; its complete conquest would give Russia a permanent land bridge to the Crimean peninsula.

Mariupol has been a Russian target from the beginning.
