Rangers and Frankfurt fans clash in ugly scenes before the Europa League final in Seville

The problems come after Spanish police confirmed the arrests of five Germans late Tuesday night after clashes in the city. Footage from the incident shows that Rangers fans were thrown rockets, and police were forced to intervene.

Police expected up to 100,000 Rangers to travel to Seville for the Europa League final as their team chases a second European trophy in 50 years.

About 50,000 Frankfurt fans were also expected to travel, with most of the two groups of traveling supporters without tickets.

Wednesday’s match was the first European final for the Rangers since 2008 in Manchester, where they lost 2-0 to Zenit St. Petersburg in a match overshadowed by problems with the audience with 39 people arrested and police called for riots. Prior to the clash with Frankfurt, several Rangers Icons such as Graham Sunes and Ali McCoist called for calm among fans traveling to Seville.

Frankfurt’s path to the final was also affected by problems among supporters, as German fans clashed with West Ham fans in Seville when the former played against Real Betis and the latter against Sevilla in March.
