KANSAS CITY, MO. (KCTV) – The investigation is underway after two people were shot and wounded in the area of the 50th and Oak on Wednesday night.
TIME AND LOCATION
The double shooting took place at about 5:45 pm in the area of 50th Street and Oak Street, which is in front of the UMCC Police Department.
The vehicle in which the victims were was in the northern lanes and stopped. Then a pedestrian approached the car from the sidewalk and started firing. Numerous shots were reported.
The victims then went to Whole Foods. This led to police activity in the parking lot of the store near 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard. By 7 pm, most of this police activity had been cleared.
CAMPUS CONNECTION
Police said the shooting did not appear to be accidental. Rather, it seems purposeful.
The shooting did not take place on the UMKC campus; it happened very close to him.
The Kansas City Police Department said: “There is NO active shooter on campus and we do not believe this is related to the UMKC.”
The KCPD added that the shooter and the victims appeared to know each other.
VICTIM STATUS
One victim is life-threatening and the other life-threatening. They are both old men.
SUSPICION STATUS
The suspect is at large. Authorities have some suspicious information, but nothing significant enough to share with the public.
THE SIGNALS FROM UMKC
Some people posted screenshots on social media, saying the UMKC sent a signal during the shooting. A source also shared a copy of the signals with KCTV5 News; we shared them below.
KCTV5 News contacted the university for any additional information.
THE GRADUATION EVENT DURING
KCPS Eastern High School is holding a prom at UMKC tonight. This is still going on despite this situation, according to a live online broadcast.
Editor’s note: For those who follow the coverage closely, the original location of this shooting was reported as 51st and Oak. We’ve learned since then that it happened on the 50th and Oak.
