The record heat rising in drought-stricken plains and parts of Texas is moving east, and hundreds of temperature records could fall in its path.
From Thursday to Sunday, about 130 record high temperatures are forecast to be connected or broken in parts of 20 states. “Almost every day from Friday to Sunday, we see rival daily record temperatures that are 15 to 20 degrees above the May norm,” said Aaron Swigget, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Maximum temperatures will range from 94 to 96 degrees throughout the weekend in Raleigh, setting records that have stood for nearly a century. The excessive heat is partly due to the wide meteorological picture throughout the country. For the past few days, higher-level winds in the atmosphere, known as jet streams, have been zonal – or more from west-east.
As this model has survived, a huge high-pressure dome has accumulated steam, allowing unusually warm weather to build up and expand from the plains to both the southern and eastern halves of the nation.
By Friday afternoon, high temperatures in cities including Cleveland, Washington, Nashville, Tennessee and Richmond, Virginia, will range between 90 and 95 degrees – all warm enough to challenge daily records, some of which date back to the 1930s. century.
The 90-degree heat will be widespread and affect millions, but parts of the south may even see their first three-digit temperatures of the season.
Columbia, South Carolina, has already experienced three 90-degree days this month, but Thursday and Friday could begin the city’s first 100-degree days in 2022. The average high in Columbia is only 84 at this time of year.
Atlanta has managed to avoid the 90-degree heat so far this season, but with a maximum of 15 degrees above average, her luck ended on Thursday. The first 90-degree day of the year in Atlanta usually falls on July 3. However, the forecast is to reach 90 degrees by Saturday.
“It’s definitely too early for this type of heat,” Swigett told CNN. “We would usually see these temperatures in the middle of summer.
With the first really significant heat wave hitting the eastern United States this year, he warned against outdoor activities this weekend. “The importance of the shadow is really important. “We forecast temperatures for the shade, so it will feel even worse in the sun,” Swigett said.
The hottest air of the year reaches the northeast
By Saturday and Sunday, the 1990s will reach the northeast and parts of New England.
The average height in Central Park is only 72 at this time of year. The forecast for Saturday is 93 degrees. The last time the city registered a 90-degree day was on August 27.
In Philadelphia on Saturday, the highest level is forecast at 97, which would exceed the previous record of 95 degrees since 1934.
If you are looking for relief, you will not find it in New England.
“With the construction of high pressure south of our area, we expect both heat and humidity to increase over the weekend,” said Joe Polina, a meteorologist with the Upton Meteorological Service in Newton, New York.
Recordings are available in Hartford, Connecticut; Manchester, New Hampshire and Burlington, Vermont, where maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 92 and 95 degrees. This will challenge the records, which in some places are more than 110 years old.
In Boston, the average high temperature at this time of year is 68 degrees, but the city predicts highs between 90 and 93 this weekend.
“You have to calm down, it’s not like the heat in mid-summer, when we all had a little time to acclimatize,” Matthew Belk, a meteorologist at the Boston Meteorological Service, told CNN.
People need to take this heat seriously and take appropriate precautions.
“The heat is a very vile killer,” Chesnea Skin, a meteorologist with the Stirling, Virginia Meteorological Service, told CNN. “Many in the public do not see him as a huge threat, but in fact he is one of the biggest killers, as is the case in extreme times. As it is a hot event at the beginning of the season, take it seriously, stay hydrated and stay away from the sun. ”
Fortunately for most, the heat will not last after the weekend.
Late Sunday afternoon, a powerful cold front will approach from the west, increasing cloud cover and the potential for several thunderstorms.
As cooler air is filtered from the back to the front, Monday will lead to lower temperatures in cities including New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Atlanta – where the maximum is projected to be in the 70s.
