The paramedics spun stretcher after stretcher under a police tape. The eight wounded were taken to hospitals in serious to critical condition, and at least one of them underwent surgery, firefighters said. Their age was not immediately known.

The chaotic scene quickly spilled over the almost Red Line as police searched for a suspect and a gun, stopped at least one train and evacuated passengers. CTA officers were stationed near the subway entrance as police combed the rails.

Police did not disclose further details, but witnesses said the shooting stemmed from a fight in front of a McDonald’s.

“When the battle first started, we were right next to them,” said Deona Jackson, 18. “We had to run because I didn’t want anyone to attack me.”

“We were literally right there,” she said. “The man they jumped on, we talked to the people he was with, who turned out to be some kind of girls.”

“We get to 7/11, we turn around and they just start firing, shooting like crazy,” Jackson said.

Tensions erupted amid a crowd of onlookers, some shouting as officers blocked the streets around McDonald’s. Some of the crowd began to fight with each other, and the officers moved quickly to defeat them.

One man asked an officer why it should be so. “No need,” the officer replied.
