Driver rescued after ignoring flood barricades and sinking car

A 21-year-old man from Winnipeg had to be rescued from his sinking car after ignoring barricades and driving in a flooded area in southern Manitoba.

The RCMP received an emergency call at 8:15 a.m. Thursday from a man who said he was blocked in his vehicle on Provincial Road 200, north of St. Adolf, in the rural municipality of Richot.

He said water was pouring into his car, that it had reached his steering wheel and that he could not get out through the doors or windows.

Officers and firefighters found the vehicle and rescued the man, who was then fined $ 237 under the Highway Barricades Traffic Disobedience Act.

“We all know that there are land floods in areas of our province and that this flood has led to a number of road closures.” Julie Courchain, a spokeswoman for the Manitoba RCMP, said in a press release.

“Barricades are set up to be safe. No one should ever try to get around them under any circumstances.”

St. Adolf is one of many areas in the Red River Valley that are experiencing major spring floods, as well as areas in the western and eastern parts of the province.

Roads, bridges and other infrastructure are affected in dozens of communities in the southern half of the province.
