Decare: 308 971 | Retention: 40% General staff: 2707 Start date: Peak of the Hermits: April 6, 2022; Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022 | Cause: Peak Hermits: Point fires from prescribed burning; Calf Canyon: Under investigation Location: Located near Gallinas Canyon. Fuels: Heavy mixed conifers, pine ponderosa, shrubs and grass
Highlights: Air resources were able to participate in several hours of operations yesterday before wind speeds became dangerous. Wind-driven point fires caused lines in the western and southern zones. Lower temperatures and the injection of moisture in the area today should help firefighters in their efforts in all areas. Residents of San Miguel, Mora, Taos and Colfax counties must remain on high alert for changes in evacuation status and road closures. Stage 3 to close the entire forest to the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests is in effect.
Operations:
Western Zone (SWAIMT1): A spot fire northwest of Angostura burned several acres south of NM HWY 518 near Comales Canyon. Heavy equipment and crews worked to build a line to control the site and protect nearby communities. The crews worked hard on the northern end of the fire near Lake Martinez to prevent further spread in this direction. Today, air resources and ground crews will take advantage of the favorable weather to strengthen the direct line around the fire on site and near Lake Martinez. Construction of an emergency line will begin east of the communities near Penasco. Conservation work will continue in Loma Linda, Tres Ritos and other communities along Corridor 518. New evacuation levels have been introduced around Penasco in Corridor HWY 73.
Eastern Zone (CAIIMT2): Yesterday, the open fire line at the northern end of the fire in the Eastern Zone was surrounded by hoses. The structures in Guadalupe are prepared, with sprinklers and hoses placed in and around the community as additional protection. Preparations for the Sierra Bonita structure have been completed and crews have moved on to continue clearing homes in Black Lake and surrounding areas. The work done will help make these communities more secure. Along the Taos / Colfax County line, bulldozers and hand crews began building an emergency line, working north to Angel Fire. Firefighters also worked east of the fire near the Boy Scouts’ property, with strong support from Filmont Ranch staff. Today, with forecasts of cooler weather and weaker winds, firefighters will give priority to strengthening the firing line at the northern end of the fire. In addition, crews continue to patrol and clean the eastern end of the fire. Preparatory work for emergencies will continue in and around several communities north of the perimeter of the fire.
Southern Zone (CAIIMT5): Yesterday, strong winds intensified inland fire activity near Lone Pine Mesa, but did not pose a threat to structures in Gallinas. The winds also intensified fire activity in the western perimeter, especially in Bear Creek. Today, strong winds have the potential to significantly increase fire activity east of the Pecos Valley. Firefighters are ready to take action if the fire threatens any structures. Residents living in the upper Pecos Valley must remain on high alert for changes in evacuation status.
