One person was killed and eight others were injured on Friday night when they were shot during a large hookah party in the Highlands.
The shooting in the San Bernardino County community was reported shortly before midnight in block 3600 on East Highland Avenue. Police met a large crowd of about 100 people in the hookah party area.
A victim of a shooting outside died on the spot. A woman at the scene, who identified herself as the victim’s grandmother, said he was 20 years old.
Another eight people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said. The sheriff’s department initially said 10 people had been shot, but later updated that number to nine, including the deceased.
Police are looking for two shooters in connection with the shooting, a source close to the investigation told NBCLA. The source said most of the injured were caught in the crossfire.
Evidence markers are placed at a nearby gas station. A crime scene block blocked the intersection early Saturday near Tha Blu Flame Lounge.
NBCLA turned to the business for comment.
The motive for the shooting is being clarified, police said.
There are no reports of arrests. Detailed descriptions of the shooters were not immediately available.
