Gas boilers may soon be banned in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.
To encourage people to look for greener options, the government is offering grants to install heat pumps to help cover costs.
Heat pumps are a greener way to heat your home and can also reduce your energy bills.
They work a bit like a reverse refrigerator, extracting heat from the air outside and pumping it into the home.
There are two types of air source heat pumps, air-to-water systems and air-to-air systems.
There are also heat pumps on the ground that take heat from underground by pumping water through it into pipes.
According to the Energy Helpline, air source pumps are usually cheaper, with purchase and installation costs between £ 8,000 and £ 14,000.
Ground source heat pumps are far more expensive from £ 15,000 to £ 25,000, although the price for both depends on the size of your home.
To help with the costs, you can apply for a grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which opens on May 23.
You can get up to £ 6,000 to cover the cost of a ground source heat pump or £ 5,000 for an air source heat pump.
You can save up to £ 5,000 on a biomass boiler that uses natural materials such as wood pellets to supply heating and hot water if you live in a rural area.
All grants can go to the cost of the device itself and the cost of installation – no need to return the money.
If the heat pump or boiler costs more than that, you will have to cover the rest of the cost yourself.
The money means you will pay an amount closer to what you would pay if you installed a traditional gas boiler, which can cost from £ 500 to £ 1,500.
Households could benefit in the long run by installing a heat pump, as you could save up to £ 1975 if you replaced your gas boiler with a heat pump.
The scheme is available in England and Weld from now until 2025 and you will need to own the home you are in to qualify.
You will not receive the money directly, you will need to find a heat pump installer registered in the scheme who will apply for the grant on your behalf.
The amount will then be deducted from your work bill.
Here you can find an installer in your area and you will need to consult with your chosen engineer to see if the work qualifies for the scheme.
Remember, when you do some work, to get a few offers to get the best price.
