PALOS VERDES ESTATES, California – Southern California firefighters found one dead and three injured on a beach under an ocean cliff early Monday, authorities said.

Palos Verdes Estates police called the Los Angeles County Fire Department before dawn to report a man who was probably “on the side” of the cliff. Firefighters found the four people 300 feet (91 meters) down the cliff, said fire chief Martin Rangel.

One person was killed, two were injured and one was slightly injured, Rangel said.

The victims are described as only two women and two men. Helicopters for television news showed a fire helicopter lifting victims for rescue vehicles on top of the cliff.

Rangel said he did not know how the incident happened.

Palos Verdes Estates is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula at the southern end of Los Angeles County. A trail runs along the top of the bluff high above the Pacific Ocean.
