SAULT STE. MARY MITCH – Paula Wilson Maleport and neighbors on East 5 Mile Road heard a loud explosion around 4:15 a.m. Thursday morning.

When they checked where the sound was coming from, nothing unusual happened.

“My husband said it sounded like artillery,” said Wilson Maleport. “There was no rumble. Wake me up. I couldn’t see anything because of the trees. ”

Down a long alley, surrounded by thick leaves and grass, a house was engulfed in flames.

Suo Fire Chief Jeff Killips believes the emergency call was made by a police officer after 5 a.m. Soo Township Fire Department received the call around 5:21 p.m.

They arrived just before 5:30 in the morning

The department was assisted by the Dafter Fire Department and the Sugar Island Voluntary Fire Department.

Killips said no one was in the house when the apparent explosion occurred.

“Gas tanks that power the house and are usually away from it for that reason alone,” Killips said. “I guess it was running in the house, but I don’t know for sure. We had to close the tank when we got there.

Killips confirmed that no one was in the house during the fire.

“I spoke to the owner’s son,” said Wilson Maleport. “He said his mother was in the Market.”

There is nothing left in the plot but ruins, now surrounded by a yellow warning strip.

The incident is under investigation.
