New details are emerging about the tragic incident that killed a Brantford woman over the weekend.
Twenty-seven-year-old Shelby Humble-Neil was killed by a falling tree in the protected area of Lake Pinehurst in Ayr during a severe storm on Saturday.
Police say this is a pass for several others.
OPP Const. Conrad Vitalis said that when police arrived on the scene, they saw a large tree fall on a camper trailer and “essentially crushed it”.
Humble-Neal was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was later pronounced dead. Two other people were transported to hospital with minor injuries.
“There were five or six people camping on the site, they saw the storm coming and went to the trailer for shelter,” Vitalis said. “Unfortunately, shortly after I got on the trailer, I realized that then a strong wind blew up the tree, crushing the trailer and causing injuries.
Humble-Neil is remembered by friends as a one-of-a-kind friend who is caring and sociable.
Police reminded people to be aware of their surroundings during a storm, but said an incident like this was incredibly rare.
“I can honestly say about my over 10 years in Brant County, this is the first time I’ve heard of [a tree] it falls on a person, “Vitalis said. “[It was] just completely unfortunate circumstances that they found themselves in this trailer at the time. “
You’re camping for a long weekend, aren’t you? It’s so unbelievably unfortunate for that to happen, “Vitalis continued.
Lake Pinehurst’s command area was closed for several days for cleaning. It is now open for daily use, but some areas remain off-limits.
