SACRAMENTO, Calif. >> A fugitive suspect after six people were killed in a mass shooting during an alleged gangster dispute in the California capital last month has been arrested in Las Vegas, authorities said.
Investigators believe Mtula Peyton was one of the alleged gang members who opened fire in downtown Sacramento on April 3. He was detained in a residential complex, according to a statement from the Sacramento Police Department on Saturday night.
“The Las Vegas Police Department has been working with our detectives for weeks trying to find Peyton,” the statement said.
It was not known on Sunday if Peyton had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
Peyton and two others, brothers Smiley Martin and Dandrae Martin, were charged this month with manslaughter and gun crimes.
Investigators did not provide reasons, but said in court documents that Smiley Martin and his companions recorded online video hours before the shooting, flashing weapons and talking garbage from a place on the territory of the rival gang. In it, they announced their plans to head to the city center with the intention of opening fire.
Three men allegedly gang members and three innocent passers-by were killed in a shootout that erupted at bars and nightclubs on the city’s streets. A dozen others were injured.
The Martin brothers, who were among the wounded, remain in prison. The brothers’ lawyers have not yet commented on their accusation.
Peyton, who police say is a member of a rival gang, has been held in a Nevada jail pending transportation back to California.
