The gentle Microsoft update for the Surface Go laptop

Microsoft announced the next Surface device today; Surface Laptop Go 2. Based on the Surface Laptop Go from 2020, it promises to be a smaller laptop with enough power and performance to provide you with comfort during the working day, while staying as mobile as possible.

Microsoft is introducing the Surface Laptop Go 2 with “flexible mobility for workplace” conversations, which sets this laptop up as the smaller laptop designed for work. Creation further highlighted by mentions of hot twilight and trips to conference rooms.

Disappointingly, this is not a consumer version of the Surface Laptop SE designed for the education market; The specifications of the Laptop Go 2 show that it is aimed at a higher level in the portfolio, offering a touch screen, Intel Core chipsets of 11th generation and up to 16 GB of memory, backup of 128 GB or 256 GB of memory.

Microsoft also offers Laptop Go 2 to both consumers and businesses. Only enterprise models have the 16 GB RAM option, as well as Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro; users can purchase Go 2 only with Windows 11 Home.

The first Surface Laptop Go moved the minimalist Surface design language to a smaller laptop form factor, but there were some weaknesses. The smaller screen remains with a resolution of only 1536 x 1024 pixels. This Intel chip is the next generation of the original Laptop Go, but it is still a generation behind the current marketing standard. Microsoft has highlighted the improved thermal performance of the Go 2, something I look forward to testing in the future because the original Laptop Go runs hot.

Surface Laptop Go 2 is in a crowded laptop space. The starting price of $ 599 looks attractive, but this is for a 4 GB RAM / 128 GB SSD model. Add $ 100 for usable 8 GB of memory and another $ 100 to increase storage to 256 GB and you’ll take on some of the biggest names in the market.

It seems that Microsoft has decided on many of the same trade-offs as the first Surface Laptop Go model, trade-offs that made this laptop great to watch, but not the laptop that had to be bought. I’m curious to see how the package is updated and how it works in the real world.
