“We really need to look for some innovative solutions in this province,” Quigley said. “We have very high levels of addiction and a lot of violence stems from addiction problems in our communities.
Drug-related violence and gang violence are two other major problems stemming from addiction, and to address it, Quigley said there will need to be more unconventional thinking to take profitability away from drug trafficking. This may include safe consumption sites, something that British Columbia has also made some progress with, but something that has made Saskatchewan slower.
“How can we eliminate the profit aspect of drug trafficking so that it does not cause violence and other criminal problems?” Quigley said. “By making sure that people who are addicted to drugs have safe drugs to use. We see some restraint on the part of our government here. ”
Although the small limit on personal medications will not directly eliminate the overdose, there is one way Quigley said he could make a small dent in the problem.
“The only positive thing I see from him is the reduction of the stigma around drug use,” Quigley said. “We know there is a lot of stigma in society and people are kind of underground when they use drugs. If you are alone, unattended or in the company of others, you are much more likely to overdose and not get any help. “
Quigley added that the federal government does not always want to enter areas with provincial jurisdiction, which may explain why they are not currently trying to promote this anywhere but British Columbia.
