An investigation has been launched and officers are conducting video surveillance, forensic scientists and witnesses at the scene. Patrols are also active in the local area, as Merseyside police say they want to reassure the local community. They believe the attack was targeted.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Wilson said: “We are at a very early stage in this investigation. We want to talk to all witnesses or anyone who has any information. We understand the fear that causes gun crimes and I would like to reassure the community that we believe that this was a targeted attack that we are investigating in depth.

“Firearms have no place on the streets of Merseyside, and we remain committed to removing them and the people who choose to carry them. It is absolutely vital that we get all the information from those communities that are feeling the impact of gun crimes so that we can bring those responsible to justice.

“It happened in a residential area and there will probably be people who may have witnessed the incident or who is responsible. I would urge anyone who was at Springvale Close last night and saw something or someone suspicious to contact the police.

“Similarly, if you have driven in the area and have footage from the dashboard, please review it and tell us if you see anything. The information you hold may be vital to our investigation.

“Shooting a gun in a residential street is extremely reckless and dangerous and could have led to more tragic circumstances. So if you know anything, please tell us and we will take action against the perpetrators. “
