Weekend rain helps melt snow and keep Bike Big White on schedule – Kelowna News

Despite the late start of the meltdown, plans are still on track to open Bike Big White on June 30th.

Much of the snowmelt melted in the mountains over the weekend, thanks to torrential rain.

“From the day of the closing, it literally snowed every week until last week. We had 25 millimeters of rain over the weekend, so it’s melting very fast, which is good news for the opening day on June 30, “said Michael J. Balingol, senior vice president of Big White Ski Resort.

Rapid melting causes streams and streams around the mountain to rise rapidly.

“This is the time of year when we simply advise everyone to stay away from streams and rivers both in the mountains and outside the mountains, down here in the valley,” adds Ballingle.

A high-flow warning was issued late last week and remains in force for the central Okanagan waterways.

“I would say that for places like high-altitude snowfall in the Okanagan Mountains and Monashi / borderland, for example, we are probably in the melting peak at the moment,” said Dave Campbell of the BC River Forecast Center on Friday.

Balingol points out that because the snow lasts so long, they are lagging behind with some of their summer work at Big White.

“You can’t start playing in the ground until you get to the ground. So this year we are about a month late.

“We will repair, build and rearrange some of the bike paths as we go through the summer. The best ride will be at the end of July and throughout August. ”

He says interest is high, with many people contacting the resort to ask about mountain bike storage.

Removing pandemic restrictions means there will be events at Big White almost every weekend this summer, including live entertainment.
