Last summer, the “thermal dome” killed 15 people in Kelowna and another 17 in Kamloops, according to a new investigation by the coroner.
On Tuesday, the Coronation Office of British Columbia adjusted the number of deaths due to the heat wave of June 2021 to 619, compared to 595 reported earlier.
A total of 84 of them occurred in the interior region, representing 14 per cent of heat-related deaths in the province between 25 June and 1 July 2021 – when temperatures exceeded 45 C in the region.
Kelowna and Kamloops are the only inland cities in British Columbia among the dozen communities for which the report provides detailed statistics. The majority of deaths occurred in the lower continent.
BC Coroners Service also found some clear patterns in the way people die: 98 percent of deaths occurred indoors, and deaths were higher among those with chronic diseases such as schizophrenia, substance abuse, epilepsy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, asthma, mood disorders and anxiety and diabetes.
Approximately one third of heat victims were 70 years of age or older, and 56% lived alone.
Most deaths have occurred in homes without fans or air conditioners.
