A five-month-old child has returned to safety with family members, and a 27-year-old Calgary man is facing charges after a car was stolen from Stratmore, Alta, with the baby inside.
It happened shortly before 10:30 pm on Saturday, when police said the couple stopped to rest and were standing next to their car. A man wearing a reflective vest then jumped inside the vehicle and fled, police said.
“One of the passengers managed to take off a passing vehicle and followed him as he passed information to the RCMP dispatcher,” police said.
“With the information provided, the responding Strathmore members were able to get to the location of the vehicle while [a] The Calgary Police Department’s HAWCS helicopter has moved to a surveillance position. “
The vehicle is moving west on rural roads, reaching a speed of 160 km / h, police said.
After reaching the overpass on Highway 1 and Highway 9, the vehicle stopped and the thief removed the child from the vehicle, placing him on the side of the road before setting off again.
“One of Stratmore’s responders rushed in and swept the baby off the highway. The baby reunited with the complainant when they arrived on the scene with the Good Samaritan, who initially followed the suspect vehicle, police said.
“The baby’s mother arrived a little later.”
HAWCS continued to track the stolen vehicle on Highway 1 and on rural roads in Township Road 243 and Range Road 281, near Chestermere.
There, the suspect reached the gate of a new building and the vehicle got stuck.
The man then went out and tried to escape, but was detained by police.
Tejinder Brar, 27, is charged with:
- Abduction of a child under 14 years of age;
- Vehicle theft;
- Escape from the police;
- Dangerous driving and;
- Failure to comply with an exemption condition.
“Police generally do not advise the public to pursue or track stolen vehicles, as this creates a high-risk situation in which all those involved could be seriously injured or worse,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“However, this situation differed in terms of the safety and well-being of an innocent child, who fortunately was restored unharmed.
