A man was found dead in his home after a fire on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

A man was found dead in a home after firefighters in Nanaimo responded to Thursday’s fire on Quill Drive.

It is not known if the man died as a result of the fire, said Stanaart Kenning, assistant chief of the Nanaimo Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire was called by a neighbor who was outside and heard a beeping sound, he said.

“They determined it was a smoke alarm across the street,” Kenning said. “They went to investigate, noticed smoke inside, and called 911.”

When the teams arrived, they were told there was probably someone inside the home.

“They went in and found a man in the living room in a hospital bed who had died,” Kenning said. The man, described as a senior, had mobility problems, he said.

Nanaimo RCMP, the BC Ambulance Service and the BC Coroner’s Office were also present at the scene.
