A motorcyclist is fighting for his life in hospital after a collision on Highway 401 in Pickering on Friday afternoon, which led to a prolonged closure.
Ontario Provincial Police said it happened in the western lanes of the highway near Brock Road shortly after 5:30 p.m.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmid said witnesses testified to police that two motorcycles were traveling at high speed and split in the lane through traffic when one of them cut a vehicle before colliding with a second vehicle.
The rider, a 34-year-old man, was then thrown off the motorcycle, Schmid said.
He was airlifted to a trauma center in Toronto with life-threatening injuries.
“Please drive safely, drive responsibly and follow traffic rules,” Schmid said. “This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable on our highways.”
The western lanes of the highway between Brock Road and Westney Road remain closed on Friday night. Schmid said the closure was expected to end around 10 p.m.
