A 49-year-old woman is lucky to have escaped with life-threatening injuries after her jeep fell from an overpass on Highway 1 in Burnaby on Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to the Grandview ramp around 8:15 p.m. to report a crash to a vehicle, according to Assistant Fire Chief Darcy Robinson.

At the scene, they found a crushed jeep in a grassy area in the middle of the Trans Canada Highway.

“The vehicle passed through the nose of the guardrail first on the highway below in the grassy middle and then back on its tires,” Robinson said.

Firefighters did not need to rescue the female driver, he said, but she was taken to hospital on suspicion of a broken arm.

“The girl is super lucky,” Robinson said.

Traffic east on the highway was supported for some time as crews closed all eastern lanes to clear up the crash.

Burnaby’s RCMP is investigating the cause of the crash. They do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors, but do not rule out speed or rain contributing to the accident.
