A man is dead after a crash of several vehicles on York Boulevard near ramp 403 on Saturday night.
Initial police reports say seven vehicles were involved, but a police update lists only three vehicles that made contact.
Dave Thompson, supervisor of Hamilton’s paramedic service, told CBC Hamilton this morning that not all vehicles believed to be involved collided with each other, “because they had to veer to avoid it.”
Police say that around 7:30 p.m., a 61-year-old man from Hamilton was driving a 2003 Nissan sedan south on York Boulevard (toward downtown) on the bridge near the QEW ramp.
“He then entered the northern lanes and on the road to the 2008 Jeep Liberty,” police said in a statement.
“The front of the driver of the Nissan car hit the rear of the driver of the Jeep.”
Police say the jeep suffered “significant damage” before stopping along the eastern curb.
Officials say Nissan is turning counterclockwise at 2022 Mercedes-Benz, with the front end of the Mercedes-Benz hitting the door of Nissan’s front passenger. Both vehicles stopped along the curb.
Police say a 61-year-old man in a Nissan has been pronounced dead on the spot.
Thompson said a 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital in stable condition, but police said two women in the back of the Mercedes-Benz were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police say damage and speed have not yet been ruled out as the causes of the crash.
The CBC is seeking clarity from police on some of the details of the crash.
The collision closed the road for six hours.
This is the 13th road accident in the city this year and the second with a driver.
Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police have been asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Department at 905-546-4753.
