Protesters, including LGBTQ supporters and several Democratic politicians in New York, have objected to Chelsea Pierce over her “dangerous” decision to host a Sunday conference attended by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
A video posted on Twitter shows dozens of protesters, including LGBTQ veteran activist Alan Roscoff, in front of Quay 60, chanting “Shame! and “Boycott Chelsea Pierce” and rising signs reading “Say Gay” and “Not During the Month of Pride” as people entered the facility on Sunday morning.
Critics say the Republican should not be allowed to speak at an event organized by the Jewish group Tikvah Fund because of his signing of a law banning schooling related to sexual orientation or gender identity for children in kindergarten up to fourth grade.

Earlier this week, Big Apple officials called on the Manhattan venue to cancel DeSantis’ speech at the Jewish Leadership Conference over the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, especially since the event is held during Pride Month and is a central neighborhood. in the history of LGBTQ.
“As #LGBTQ elected officials, we demand that @ChelseaPiersNYC cancel the event with Florida Governor Don’t Say Gay @RonDeSantisFL during # pridemonth2022 in Chelsea, the heart of our community,” Heilman tweeted Monday.

In a statement issued Friday, Chelsea Piers said he “could not oppose the governor’s policies more strongly” and that Pier Sixty would donate the Tikvah Fund money to groups serving LGBTQ people.
“Over the past 24 years, Pier Sixty has hosted hundreds of influential and remarkable events covering a range of social and political issues. Pier Sixty has never controlled the content, program or speakers of these events, “the statement said. “Having said that, we could not disagree more strongly with many of Ron DeSantis’ actions in office. One answer to disgusting behavior is to oppose it with positive actions. Accordingly, Pier Sixty will direct every dollar he receives from Pumpkin to groups protesting against LGBTQ + communities and encouraging and intensifying productive debates on LGBTQ + issues. ”
The Tikvah Foundation originally planned to host DeSantis along with several other speakers at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York, but those plans failed after the facility refused to accept the governor, organizers said.

The Jewish Heritage Museum denied last month that it had chosen not to rent out its space for the Tikvah Fund event if DeSantis showed up, saying it had “never signed a contract with the Tikvah Fund for the event to be held.” in the museum and no deposit has ever been made. “
Titled “Jews, Israel, and the Future of the West,” the Pumpkin Conference will also feature former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Elliott Abrams, Deputy National Security Adviser to President George W. The governor and potential presidential candidate in 2024 sparked controversy over the signing in March of a bill on parental rights in education, which liberal and left-wing critics mockingly called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
Its text reads: “Classroom training by school staff or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not be conducted in kindergarten up to 3rd grade or in a manner that is not appropriate for the age or development of students in accordance with state standards.
On Sunday morning, Archilla, who is gay, told the crowd that DeSantis had “asked children like mine to pretend that people like their mothers did not exist,” she said in a video.
“What he’s doing with the ‘Don’t say gay’ law is actually trying to make our community disappear from society,” said Archilla, who is running with public lawyer and gubernatorial candidate Jumaan Williams. That is why it is so dangerous, cynical and lazy for Chelsea Pierce to say that they will just give him a platform because they do.
“You have to be able to draw the line.”
Niu, who is running for Congress, tweeted Sunday that Chelsea Pierce “allowed hatred” by allowing DeSantis to speak.
