MADESON, Wisconsin – There were preconditions for an early outbreak, but the United States made adjustments on Monday night and turned the gold medal final of the U18 World Hockey Championship into a real thriller.
But Canada, which built a 3-0 lead with goals from Alexia Aubin, Ava Murphy and Jocelyn Amos, managed to hold on and beat the United States 3-2 at LaBahn Ice Arena on Monday night.
Finley McCarthy and Claire Enright scored in the second period by seven seconds to make the last period interesting.
The U-18 Women’s Hockey Championship has been hit by cancellations and delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was originally scheduled for January in Linköping and Mölby, Sweden, before being postponed and relocated.
The 2021 event, which will be held in the same Swedish cities, has been canceled while the World Under-20 Championships in Edmonton and the Under-18 Championships in Frisco, Texas, have continued as planned.
The International Ice Hockey Federation caused a negative reaction on social media when it announced the cancellation of the women’s tournament in 2022, two weeks after it began on January 8. The announcement came on the eve of the Under-20 Men’s Championship, which returns to Edmonton – which lasted just four days due to outbreaks of COVID.
The IIHF announced in March that the Women’s Under-18 Championship in 2022 would be moved and rescheduled instead of being canceled outright.
CHECKS: Earlier in the day, Finland beat Sweden 3-0 in front of 2,273 spectators at LaBahn Ice Arena to win the bronze medal. Sani Vanhanen scored all three goals for the winners, while Emilia Kirkko made 35 saves to save.
