New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday signed a new law expanding legal protection for people seeking and providing abortion in New York.
The bill came in response to an expected ruling by the US Supreme Court, which could potentially overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case, which legalized abortion.

An expired draft Supreme Court opinion on the decision sparked protests across the country and prompted Congress to strengthen the security of Supreme Court judges.
“My friends, the sky is literally on the verge of falling in the next week or two, so we are here today,” said Governor Hochul, awaiting a decision. “The right to control our bodies must be settled so far, or so we thought.”

A new New York law protects abortion providers from arrest, extradition and litigation in other states by prohibiting state and local courts and law enforcement agencies from cooperating in most scenarios.
Under another new law, New York will protect the right of people to seek abortion care in the state.
People can be prosecuted for unlawfully interfering with their right to reproductive health care when other persons or organizations bring civil or criminal charges against them for seeking, accessing or granting an abortion.

Laws protecting abortion and care providers take effect immediately.
