Ottawa calls to end vaccination mandates for domestic and outbound flights

The federal government is due to announce the end of its mandate for a vaccine against COVID-19 on Tuesday for domestic travel by plane and train, as well as for outbound international travel, CBC News has learned.

Sources with direct knowledge of the decision told CBC News that the government could restore the requirement for a vaccine if there is a new variant of the virus. CBC News did not name the sources, as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

Vaccine travel mandates have been in effect since 30 October 2021. As the mandate was phased in, travelers had a one-month grace period during which they could instead provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test.

The government has come under pressure from opposition parties as well as industry organizations to ease some public health measures in response to delays and long queues at airports.

When the vaccine mandate came into force for travel, Federal Transport Minister Omar Algabra said it was to protect passengers and industry workers.
