The end of an era

This is the end of an era for a Vernon restaurant.
After more than four decades, Dwayne and Jackie Popovich, owners of DJ’s Perogie Kitchen, hang their aprons.
“We loved making Ukrainian food and meeting a lot of wonderful customers over the last 42 years,” Jackie said.
“For three and a half years I worked in the Greyhound restaurant for Mary Sidorchuk, who was a great chef. I feel very happy to have learned Ukrainian cuisine from her and Stefan Kuipka, who was a chef at the time.
The couple took over the bustling Greyhound restaurant in 1980.
“Bus drivers always advised people to eat at Vernon’s bus stop, we had queues at the door.” Jackie remembers. “In 1994, it was time to move on and find a new place, then DJ’s Perogie Kitchen was born.
“It has always warmed my heart to hear customers compare my food to their grandmothers, mothers or grandmothers. Our food has even brought tears to the eyes of some customers. “
Duane and Jackie are grateful to all their clients for their support over the years.
“We loved being in business for so many years, serving generations of the same family. “It’s always been nice to watch clients’ children grow into adults and take their own children to lunch,” Jackie said.
The restaurant is now for sale. Sutton Group real estate trader Sutton Group Lakefront Realty says: “This is such a great opportunity for anyone who has moved to Okanagan or anyone who has dreamed of running their own restaurant to take on a fully operational restaurant. Jackie is happy to train the new owners to teach them the tricks of the craft and pass on all the sophisticated systems they have built over the years. ”
The DJ’s remains open as usual until it is put up for sale.
