At around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, Edmonton Police Department gang suppression officers were walking through a restaurant on Jasper Avenue and 118th Street in the Oliver neighborhood when they noticed “suspicious behavior” among a group.
As a result, a 31-year-old man was detained for obstruction. When the man was detained, officers searched him and found a loaded semi-automatic pistol in a bag tied around his chest.
“This arrest illustrates the proliferation of illegal firearms in our communities,” said a sergeant. Eric Stewart, who leads the gang suppression team, said in a press release. “This incident is particularly worrying, as this loaded firearm was in a restaurant that families often visit.
“We continue to encourage citizens to always be vigilant and aware of their surroundings, while informing the police of any suspicious activity they witness.
Since then, Yassir Shire has been charged with possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of an assault weapon dangerous to society, obstruction of a peace officer and breach of regulations.
