An elderly Edmonton woman who was seriously injured when she was pushed onto the LRT tracks in late April is suing the city of Edmonton and the Edmonton Transit System.
The lawsuit, filed on June 17, also listed the names of two unknown employees (hired or hired by the city or the ETS) in the case.
Sharda Devi Naidu, 78, was pushed onto the tracks by the Health Sciences / Jubilee LRT platform on April 25.

Edmonton police said she was standing on the platform along 114th Street near 83 Avenue waiting for a train when the man “unexpectedly ran out and pushed the woman off the platform of the LRT rails.”
Police described the incident as a “violent, unprovoked attack on a senior.”

The legal statement claims that the city and / or the ETS did not react quickly enough, did not allow adequate access to the emergency services and did not ensure that it was safe while the emergency services restored it.

Naidu spoke to Global News on the phone from his hospital bed in May while he was receiving treatment after breaking his leg.
“I was screaming for help. Then I saw the train coming. [I was there for a long time]… I thought “I’m done”. But fortunately the train stopped.
She used LRT to get to and from her shifts at the University of Alberta Hospital, where she works as a porter.

The legal document states that Naidu was waiting for LRT when she was “verbally harassed by Kendall Raine, who then physically hit her twice in the face and then again in the back of her head, then suddenly pushed the plaintiff onto the rails. on the train … The plaintiff subsequently fell a few feet from the platform and onto the rails, causing her serious bodily injuries.

“Shortly afterwards, the applicant heard the LRT train approaching. The train slowed down and arrived on the platform, followed by police, firefighters and paramedics, and the plaintiff was taken to the emergency department of the University of Alberta hospital.

The lawsuit alleges that Naidu suffered injuries to her back, two thighs, two legs, two knees, two ankles, and two feet, and that she now suffers from chronic pain, tingling, anxiety, nightmares, memory loss and stress.
The document also states that she has suffered pain and suffering, past and future loss of income, care costs, capacity to maintain the household and lost joy for life.
It also states that Naidu has and will have health costs as a result of the attack on services such as dental surgery, chiropractic, mental health, medication, optometry and transportation support.
The lawsuit seeks more than $ 1.1 million to cover general, special, pecuniary and criminal damages, as well as court costs.
It states that the city and the ETS have been negligent because:
- failed to implement sufficient security protocols on the LRT platform;
- has not installed guardrails or safety shields on LRT platforms;
- has not provided regular supervision of passengers or visitors to the premises;
- there was inadequate monitoring and monitoring of the platform;
- did not react in time to the incident;
- did not reach the plaintiff within a reasonable time, given the gravity of the incident;
- did not allow the emergency services access to the rails in order to restore the plaintiff, given the gravity of the incident;
- failed to ensure that the applicant was safe while the emergency services removed her.
These allegations have not been proven in court.
