Thunder Bay Police Chief Accused of Misconduct Announces Retirement Plan

The Ontario Civilian Police Commission says the Chief of the Thunder Bay Police Department will face a hearing on three charges of alleged violations under the Police Services Act.

The commission says this comes after an investigation that began in February.

At the time, the OCPC expressed concerns about the ability of senior management to manage the day-to-day operations of the police service “in good faith” and in accordance with the Police Services Act.

Earlier today, local media reported that boss Sylvie Hout would retire in June 2023.

The Thunder Bay Police Service has come under intense scrutiny in recent months, with indigenous leaders calling for the service to be completely disbanded due to undermined trust in the community.

In a 2018 systematic review, the Office of the Independent Director of Police Review found evidence of systemic racism in the Thunder Bay Police Department and that it affected investigations into the deaths of indigenous peoples.
