French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday referred to the decision of the US Supreme Court to overturn Rowe against Wade, although France has its own restrictions on abortion, which are stricter than the Mississippi law at the heart of the case.

“Abortion is a fundamental right for all women. It needs to be protected, “Macron tweeted. I want to express my solidarity with women whose freedoms have been undermined by the United States Supreme Court. “

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to uphold a Mississippi law that prohibits abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The Republican-led state of Mississippi has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court that lifted a 15-week ban on abortion.

In the trial, the court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade judgment and the Casey v. Planned Parenthood of 1992, which affirms the constitutional right to abortion.

“Rowe was extremely wrong from the beginning. His motives were extremely weak and the decision had harmful consequences,” Judge Samuel Alito said in a majority opinion. “And far from reaching a national settlement on the abortion issue, Rowe and Casey have sparked a debate and deepened the division. It is time to listen to the constitution and return the issue of abortion to elected representatives. “

Although Macron was among a number of international leaders criticizing the decision, France has a stricter abortion law than the Mississippi law, which seeks to impose a 15-week abortion ban.

ABORTION RIGHTS TO EXTEND TO BLUE STATES AFTER THE ABOLITION OF ROW W. WADE

France limits most abortions to 14 weeks, which was only recently increased from 12 weeks in February. This makes it similar to other countries in Europe, although more restrictive than countries such as England, where abortions are mostly limited to 24 weeks.

Macron was far from an enthusiastic supporter of change. The Guardian reported that he told a French magazine that it was “more traumatic” for women to have an abortion at a later date.

Mark Thyssen, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, was one of a number of American commentators noting the alleged double standard.

“You understand that France bans selective abortion 12 weeks, three weeks before the Mississippi law, which our Supreme Court upheld – and that abortion restrictions in France will not be allowed under Roe,” Thyssen said.

British commentator Peter Hitchens also criticized Macron and objected to him weighing the decisions of another country:

“President Macron has attended a Jesuit school and knows there is another point of view on the issue,” Hitchens tweeted. “He should also know that the Supreme Court did not * ban * abortion in the United States, but left its legality to the elected governments of the states. Why rule on the sovereign affairs of another state?”
