It was known as the Escort of the Destroyer, which fought like a warship, a small but powerful World War II ship whose crew faced the Japanese heroically during the greatest naval battle in history.
Now, nearly eight decades after it was lost, the battle-torn corpse of USS Samuel B Roberts – known as Sammy B – has been found and studied by researchers in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, making it the deepest shipwreck ever identified.
“This wreck is a testament to a fierce battle and incredible heroism – truly one of the most extraordinary stories in naval history,” said Victor Veskovo, a former U.S. Navy commander who piloted his Limiting Factor submarine to the seabed.
