A security officer fatally shot a woman in the Dallas strip club XTC Cabaret, police said

Updated with information and video from XTC Cabaret.

A security officer at a strip club in Dallas fatally shot a woman who drove her car into a crowd on Saturday, according to police and XTC Cabaret reports. The club said that the security officer was run over and she was squeezed between a car and a minibus.

“Fearing for his life, the guard reportedly shot the driver while the guard was hit and before the driver could seriously injure or kill others,” XTC said in a statement.

The club released a three-second video from the security camera, which shows a group of people trying to jump out of the way of a car moving towards them. It looks like a man pulls out a gun before being hit by a car.

Police were called around 5:10 a.m. to shoot at the club at block 8500 on the North Stemmons Highway. Police say they found 32-year-old Shalanda Anderson with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital where she died.

Police said a 26-year-old female security officer shot Anderson. Another security officer, a 30-year-old man, also shot at Anderson’s car, police said. Police did not name any of the security officers, nor did they say whether they had been charged with a crime, but detained a security guard for questioning.

The shooting at XTC, which has a history of violence, including murder, comes at a time when strip clubs are battling the city for restrictions on what hours sexually oriented companies can operate. Police have supported limiting working hours for such clubs as a way to reduce crime.

A statement from the strip club said that a woman drove her car into a group of security guards, who removed that she was driving in the wrong direction in the club’s parking lot. A third-party security guard was squeezed between the car and the van. Her leg was crushed and her leg was run over, the statement said.

Police said an independent investigation would be conducted by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Department and a referral to the grand jury would be sent to the prosecutor’s office.

Dallas police said the first responders were overwhelmed by reports of violence in or near strip clubs and other sexually oriented businesses in the early hours of the morning, and Chief Eddie Garcia advised the Dallas City Council to change the opening hours of such companies.

In January, the council unanimously approved operational restrictions requiring sexually oriented companies to close from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Several companies have filed a lawsuit against the city, and in May a federal judge ordered a temporary ban on city restrictions.

In 2019, then-Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Medrano called on the city to close the XTC Cabaret after a series of violent crimes. The club has amassed a long list of violent incidents, including deaths, since it opened in 2009.

  • A taxi driver, 30-year-old Bashir Abraham, was shot and killed in 2010 after taking two passengers at the club. The shooting happened after his passengers clashed at the club.
  • A man was shot twice during an argument outside the club in 2012.
  • In March 2013, a man was stabbed in the abdomen in the parking lot.
  • In January 2014, two men were shot dead as they were leaving the club.
  • In January 2016, a man was shot in the chest during an argument in the club’s parking lot.
  • Another man was killed in October 2017 and a woman was shot in the leg.
  • Two security guards were arrested after a 34-year-old man was fatally shot while trying to escape a fight in a New Year’s 2019 parking lot. Police said the victim, who was in his pickup truck, had been shot more than 20 times.
  • In March 2021, a 32-year-old man was found fatally shot in the club’s parking lot.

Other locations on the XTC Cabaret in Texas have also had violent incidents.

On Sunday, the Dallas club announced that it had contacted the family of the woman who died on Saturday and offered to pay for her funeral. The injured guard had multiple broken bones and underwent surgery on Sunday, the statement said.

The club also said it supported the investigation.

“We are very sad that this unfortunate incident happened and died,” XTC said in a written statement provided by a spokesman. “We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families involved.
