Colorado Avelanch are champions of the Stanley Cup. Avalanche entered the hot Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, for Game 6 and left with a 2-1 victory – and a lot of hardware.
Colorado ended Tampa Bay’s series of consecutive Stanley Cups and won its third championship in franchise history.
The lightning jumped with a 1-0 lead at the beginning, thanks to a goal by captain Stephen Stamkos. From there, however, the Avalanche took over the game. Colorado dominated the second period and was rewarded with goals from Nathan McKinnon and Arthur Lekonen. Avs took a 2-1 lead in the locker room and closed the Lightning from there.
Colorado completely suffocated Tampa Bay in the third period. Lightning failed to hit Darcy Kumper while there were approximately 10 minutes left in the regulation. Not happy to sit and wait for the clock to tick, Avs remained aggressive for the last 20 minutes, making life incredibly difficult for Lightning. Even in an empty net situation, Tampa Bay failed to get quality shots against Darcy Kumper.
After finishing at the bottom of the NHL just five years ago, the Avalanche lifted the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001 and did so against one of the greatest teams in the pay-ceiling era.
