The stars of the BET 2022 awards are not ashamed to turn to the recent decision of the Supreme Court to overturn the decision of Rowe against Wade at the ceremony on Sunday night.
The show kicked off with host Taraji P. Hanson, host Janelle Monae and best R&B / pop singer Jasmine Sullivan, who criticized the move in the first 17 minutes of the show.
“Weapons have more rights than women,” Hanson said in his monologue. “It’s a sad day in America. The weapon that can take lives has more power than the woman that can give life if she chooses.
Mona gave the middle finger and said, “Fuck you, Supreme Court” (the psyche was censored, but the gesture was not), while Sullivan called on men to support women in their struggle for their rights.
The winner of best new artist Lato later joined the criticism against the Supreme Court.
Other winners include Marsai Martin with the YoungStars Award – during her speech she encourages young people to use their voice to speak – and The Weeknd (who is not present) as the best male R&B / pop artist.
BET Awards veteran Mary J. Blige, who three years ago received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the show, won the BET Her Award for Good Morning, Magnificent. In her speech, Blige reflected on her career and all the awards she has won over the years, saying that she does not take anything for granted and is not yet ready to give up. “This is just the beginning for me,” she said.
The awards, which recognize “the creative expression and achievements of blacks in music, television, film and sports, are presented at the BET 2022 Awards Ceremony, broadcast live by the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with Taraji P. Hanson as host.
Sean “Didi” Combs was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the show, presented by Kenny “Babyface” Edmunds and Kanye Ye West. He also took the stage for a tribute performance starring Mary J. Blige, Jodesi, Us, Lil ‘Kim, Busta Rhymes, The Lox, Bryson Tiller, Faith Evans and The Maverick City Choir.
BET’s Connie Orlando co-hosted the show with Jamal Noazette. Jesse Collins Entertainment is the production company with Jesse Collins, Dion Harmon and Jeanne Rouzan-Clay as executive producers.
