JACKSONVILLE, FL – Edward Taylor was in prison for 33 years. Only a month ago, his 1986 sentence for sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl was overturned.
But on Friday, Taylor was arrested and charged with attempted murder after a shooting on Boulevard A. Philip Randolph. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a 61-year-old man was hospitalized in the shooting for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
A report on the JSO’s arrest said the shooting was filmed by the JSO’s real-time crime camera. According to the report, 57-year-old Taylor was found removing items from the trunk of a car before he was arrested, and further examination of the car revealed several bullet holes in the rear.
“The suspect was seen walking towards the victim, pointing a firearm at him and shooting him in the chest,” the police officer said in the report. A bronze-colored vehicle can be seen from the area, and while the vehicle is in motion, the report states that “several men started firing their firearms at the vehicle. After looking at this vehicle in the video surveillance and also seeing the vehicle of the suspect at the scene, which had several bullet holes shot, the vehicles look one on one. “

According to the report, Taylor said he was at the scene, but told police he heard a shot that caused him to get in his car and leave. The report states that he “advised that his vehicle started firing because bullets were fired through it.” He then pressed the accelerator to accelerate the car when he realized that one of his tires was flat. He then stopped on the side of the road, removed items from his trunk on the road and tried to change his tire when the police contacted him. “
The report added that the suspect then asked for a lawyer.
Records show that he was held in Duvall County Jail on a $ 1.1 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 18.
It is not clear why Taylor shot the man, but he is currently in prison, where, if convicted, he could spend decades of his life back in prison.

On Tuesday, The Innocence Project published a statement to News4JAX about Taylor’s arrest:

“Joint efforts to release and overturn Edward Taylor’s wrongful sentence required years of thorough, diligent and thorough investigation by government and defense organizations. We stand behind this work and the result. We cannot predict the future, and our focus on the Florida Innocence Project is precisely on the release of those wrongfully convicted, because that requires justice. At the end of the trial after the conviction, our representation of Mr. Taylor ended. It is inappropriate to comment on this new, unrelated pending issue. “
Defense attorney Shannon Shot, who is not involved in the case, said he had no apology for the crimes Taylor was accused of, but added that although his previous sentence was released, it underscored that, unfortunately, some people who have long sentences of imprisonment, again – insult when they are released from prison.
“In Florida, we have a very high recidivism rate, which means that when you get out of prison, you are likely to commit a recidivism, and unfortunately it is not uncommon very soon after they are released from prison and returned to prison or arrested for another. a crime, “Shot said.

According to the US Department of Human Services, more than two-thirds of the prisoners were arrested again within three years of their release, and half were re-imprisoned.
Shot said there is a break in the community between people who have spent time in prison.
“As a member of the community, not as a lawyer, I would like to see a greater emphasis on training and rehabilitation so that people can get the mental health, physical health, training, professional care that they actually need to contribute to our community and not be a greater burden, ”she said.
Decades ago, Taylor was identified by the child as someone who touched her. He was arrested at the age of 21, tried and convicted of sexually abusing a child, which testified at the trial of what was done to her while she was sleeping in Taylor’s house.
In 2010, the Innocence Project got involved in the case and found discrepancies.
Documents show that the child at the time identified the alleged rapist as “Jermaine’s uncle”, but investigative documents show that Love said that Jermaine had “two fathers” and “three fathers”, referring to Taylor’s brothers. Authorities never showed the child all the photos of all three. There was never any DNA evidence linking Taylor to the child.

The Innocence Project filed a motion to overturn the conviction and sentence, and the State Prosecutor’s Office did not object to the request.
