New York City Mayor Eric Adams said former city mayor Rudy Giuliani should be investigated for a fake police report on an alleged life-threatening attack at a Staten Island grocery store.
During a media appearance on Tuesday, Adams commented on the incident with a ShopRite employee who hit Giuliani on the back while the latter was in the store on Sunday.
Giuliani later accused the employee, 39-year-old Daniel Gill, of hitting him so hard that it felt like a shot. He also claims that Gil’s blow could cause him to fall and crack his skull.
However, footage from the video of the incident does not appear to show Giuliani losing his balance after Gil’s hand came in contact with his back.
Gill was initially charged with assault, a felony. The charge was reduced Monday to a third-degree assault charge, along with two additional charges of third-degree threat and second-degree harassment.
“Someone needs to remind former mayor Giuliani that falsely reporting a crime is a crime,” Adams said. “From what he said he was hit in the head, I felt like a bullet – from what he said, there was a lot of creativity. And I think the district attorney has the wrong person he’s investigating.”
“Reporting a false crime is a crime. If this video had not been there, then this man would have been accused of hitting the former mayor. He would have been charged with all these crimes that did not take place,” Adams added.
What if we didn’t have the video? “This man would be charged with a felony when all he did was pat him on the back,” Adams said.
Giuliani responded to Adams by calling him a “fucking scumbag” in an interview with the New York Post.
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I didn’t file the complaint. His police department gave the signal. The police department conducted an investigation. The police questioned witnesses,” Giuliani told the paper.
