What was a bleak day for Democracy turned out to be a bright night for late-night television.
Cassidy Hutchinson, chief aide to former President Donald Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, gave compelling testimony to scenes bordering on absurd when the United States Capitol was besieged by Trump supporters before that event.
One of the stories she told was how Trump, as later described by Trevor Noah, lost his shit when he learned of an interview his then Attorney General, Bill Barr, gave to the Associated Press.
Hubbard recounted a scene he witnessed as he entered the dining room, where, according to the White House valet, who was about to clean the ketchup off the wall, the then president threw his lunch – and his plate – on the wall.
Asked if this was an isolated example, Hubbard replied: “There were several cases during my term when I knew how he threw dishes or turned the towel over to leave all the contents of the table on the floor.
Or, as Noah summed it up in the Daily Show, “Trump was constantly causing food hysteria.”
Many of the hosts got involved in what Jimmy Kimmel Live! guest host Chelsea Handler called it a “really crazy” moment. Hutchinson described being told that Trump had tried to head to the Capitol on January 6. “I’m the fucking president, take me to the Capitol now,” Trump is said to have shouted at the details of the presidential limousine’s secret services.
Rejecting a request from agents, Trump is said to have tried to grab the steering wheel of an armored car known as the Beast to drive the car himself.
“Sir, you need to get your hands off the wheel,” Trump told Secret Service agent Robert Engel, according to Hutchinson. “We’re going back to the West Wing, we’re not going to the Capitol,” Engel continued, grabbing one of Trump’s arms. It is alleged that Trump then tried to attack Engel, the head of his secret service detail.
“This is not a way to treat a secret service agent. Here’s how you treat a contestant behind the scenes of the Miss Universe pageant, “Handler whispered before adding,” It turns out that Donald Trump was even more nasty than we thought before.
Stephen Colbert emphasized little about Trump’s alleged invasion of Engel.
“He grabbed your throat!” Said Colbert. “When you join the Secret Service, you expect to get one for the president, but not from the president.
Jimmy Fallon returned to the Tonight Show with: “Always good when you need a secret service to protect the secret services.
