More men are getting vasectomy since Roe v. Wade, Cleveland Clinic says

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The overturning of Roe v. Wade has had a big effect on male vasectomy.

Cleveland Clinic said it receives an average of about three to four requests to schedule vasectomies per day.

Since Friday, when the U.S. Supreme Court declared that abortion rights are not constitutionally protected, they have totaled about 90.

Other Northeast Ohio hospitals expect more men to opt for the procedure.

Dr. Charles Modlin, a urologist at MetroHealth, regularly performs vasectomies and expects to soon begin seeing more men in his office.

“It’s kind of a social responsibility that men have to consider as well,” Dr Modlin said.

He said the procedure is easy, takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and that recovery time is minimal.

About 500,000 vasectomies are performed in the United States each year.

For most men, this is reversible when they want to have children.

“Even though a vasectomy is potentially reversible, they actually have to consider this a permanent procedure because we can’t guarantee it will be reversible,” Dr. Modlin said.

It is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. When it comes to reproductive health, Dr. Modlin said it’s important for men and families to consider this as an option when preventing pregnancy.

“In my opinion, and in the opinion of most urologists, it’s really underutilized,” Dr. Modlin said. “Only about 5% of all married men of childbearing age in the United States have had a vasectomy. I think it’s something we need to educate the community that it’s an option.”
