Man dies in 3-car crash on Hurricane Road; wrong way driver suspected – St George News

ST. GEORGE — A vehicle veered into an oncoming lane on State Route 9 in Hurricane and caused a three-car crash that killed one person, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The crash blocked the eastbound lanes of the main highway in Hurricane for nearly three hours.

The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. near 3900 State St., in the eastbound lanes leading from the Interstate 15 exit to Hurricane. UHP, which is leading the crash investigation, said specific details of the accident are unclear, but officers said that for some reason, a silver vehicle traveling westbound veered across the center median into eastbound traffic.

“It’s still an extremely active investigation,” said Trooper Quincy Breuer. “There are multiple officers investigating. For some unknown reason, the vehicle crossed into the eastbound lanes.¨

Brewer said the silver vehicle, driven by a female driver, struck an eastbound pickup truck head-on, then struck a sport utility vehicle.

The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. The pickup ended up off the road in the dirt and brush on the side of the road, UHP said.

The driver of the silver car was injured and was transported to St. Breyer did not have information on whether there were any injuries in the third vehicle.

Eastbound SR-9 was not fully open until just before 6 p.m

Along with the Utah Highway Patrol, Hurricane Valley Fire and Hurricane Police also responded.

Brewer said it is not known if the excessive speed was involved in the 50 mph zone on the road, which is between the Lava Bluff Mobile Home Park entrance and the State Street Chevron service station.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement agencies and may not contain the full scope of findings.
