A FRAUD warning has been issued to residents of York and North Yorkshire.
North Yorkshire Police say they have seen an increase in scams where the victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from the bank’s fraud team.
The victim is told that a major fraud investigation is underway at her bank and she needs to protect her money immediately.
They are then told to visit their local branch and withdraw the amount into their cash account. If challenged as to why they are doing this, they must lie as the bank employee is involved in the fraud. They are instructed to put the money in a shoe box or similar and are given a postal address to send the money to when a new ‘secure’ account is opened for them. The victim is also told to lie to the post office about what is in the package he is sending.
Andy Fox, from North Yorkshire Police, financial fraud protection officer, economic crime unit, said: “If you are ever instructed to lie to the bank, the police, family etc about why you are withdrawing money, that is fraud.
“Please feel free to forward this advice to people in your online contact groups so they can protect their family and loved ones from this type of scam.”
