Twin brothers identified as armed bank robbers killed by police in Saanich, BC

RCMP officers in Saanich, British Columbia, have identified 22-year-old twin brothers Matthew and Isaac Auchterlony as the two armed bank robbers who were killed by police in a shootout Tuesday.

Six police officers were injured in the shooting late Tuesday morning at the Bank of Montreal in Saanich on southern Vancouver Island.

Police also said they had to defuse explosive devices that were in a vehicle linked to the suspects on Thursday.

The Ochterlony brothers, both 22, are from Duncan, British Columbia, on central Vancouver Island. According to the RCMP, neither brother had a criminal record; were not known to the police.

“There are still many questions and investigative efforts that need to be undertaken to fully understand what happened and why,” said Cpl. Alex Berube at a Saturday press conference.

“The motive behind the armed robbery and the subsequent exchange of gunfire with police remains to be determined.”

The investigation into Tuesday’s shooting is being led by the Vancouver Island Integrated Crime Unit (VIIMCU). An investigation has also been launched at the same time by the Office of Independent Investigations, the watchdog that reviews all police actions that result in death or serious injury.

Berube said police have spoken with the suspects’ family, who are cooperating with the investigation. The British Columbia coroner’s office identified the brothers on Friday, according to Bérubé.

Police said they are still seeking public information about the suspects’ car, a white 1992 Toyota Camry with two black racing stripes over the hood and roof.

They are asking anyone with information about the brothers or their car to contact VIIMCU at 250-380-6211.
