Google is starting to roll out a new Gmail upgrade to millions of users. Earlier this year, the Mountain View company released its new look for Gmail, which not only integrates Meet and Chat services, but also brings with it a new design based on Material You. When it was originally launched in February, if you wanted to try the new Gmail look, you had to specifically opt in to get it.
But starting this week, Gmail’s new design will be automatically applied to millions of accounts around the world.
If you’re not a fan and still want to stick with the old look, then you’ll have to give up.
Revealing this change to Gmail, Google said in a new blog post: “Earlier this year, we introduced a new, integrated view for Gmail that makes it easier to move between critical apps like Gmail, Chat, and Meet in one unified place.
“Starting today, we’re rolling out the opt-out experience to a segment of Gmail users. This means that selected users will see the new Gmail experience by default, but they’ll still have the option to switch back to classic Gmail through the settings menu. As we continue to roll out this new experience, the new Gmail look will also continue to be available to users who want to enable it through Quick Settings.”
For those who hate the change, the good news is that Gmail’s new look still shares a lot in common with the old design. But there are some subtle changes that help Gmail pop more off your laptop screen and improve performance.
One of the most significant changes is how the left side of the user interface looks.
Gmail users who also regularly use Chat and Meet will be able to customize the user interface for easier access to these services.
The new Gmail upgrade also brings with it a changed, fresh new look based on Google’s Material You design language.
This was first introduced with Android 12 and allows users to customize color schemes for UI elements that also carry over to other apps – including those from Google as well as third-party ones.
Talking about how Gmail’s new design helps users, Google said: “When enabled, the new navigation menu lets you easily switch between your inbox, important conversations and join meetings without having to switch between tabs or open a new window. We hope this new experience makes it easier for you to stay on top of what matters and get work done faster in one, focused place.”
