Erik ten Hag will hold talks with the missing Cristiano Ronaldo when he returns to first-team training.

Ronaldo has told Manchester United he wants to leave this summer if they receive a suitable offer amid his concerns the club are not progressing fast enough.

The 37-year-old “still has an affinity for the club” but at this stage of his career wants to play in the Champions League and doesn’t see that happening at United.

Ten Hag took charge of their first week of sessions with superstar Ronaldo still on holiday

United have no desire to sell Ronaldo and have yet to receive an enquiry. They emphasized that the striker remains under contract and they hope he will see it through.

Although the player’s agent Jorge Mendes has been meeting with various clubs in recent weeks, there is also a limited market for a player of around £480,000-a-week.

Ten Hag spoke to all of United’s players as he welcomed them back to training and will be happy to sit down with Ronaldo to understand his frustrations, especially as they are due to leave for their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia on Friday.

The Dutch coach planned for the Portuguese superstar, last season’s top scorer with 24 goals, to be part of his strike force for the new campaign and United’s transfer strategy reflects that.

As reported by Sportsmail, the striker is keen to leave and play Champions League football

Those linked to Ronaldo have pointed to the lack of new arrivals at Old Trafford this summer

Although people linked to Ronaldo have pointed to a lack of new arrivals, left-back Tyrell Malacia is set to sign from Feyenoord following a medical.

Meanwhile, productive negotiations are underway for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez.

They remain hopeful that free agent Christian Eriksen will also accept their contract offer.

However, if Ronaldo insists more on leaving, the prospect of having to find a new striker will mean a sharp reassessment of their tight budget.
