Crowds of travelers over the Fourth of July weekend were stranded outside John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Sunday during an investigation into an unattended bag, Fox News Digital has learned.

A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told Fox News Digital by phone that there was no evacuation order, but people were being “moved” from departures to arrivals at Terminal 4 amid an “unattended bag” investigation.

The official Twitter page for Kennedy Airport later announced at 12:21 p.m. that “an earlier security incident has been cleared.”

“Terminal 4 arrivals and departures walkways have reopened,” the tweet said. “Please expect residual traffic delays and allow extra travel time.”

The Port Authority spokesman said the bomb squad went in and cleared the bag, which was found to be free of any explosives and was moved out of the terminal.

The terminal was reopened for normal operations and roads were reopened. Approximately 200 people were moved, but the entire terminal was not evacuated, the spokesman added.

He does not have information on whether there are interrupted flights. The incident lasted about an hour.

Videos online showed large crowds of people with suitcases and other bags outside the terminal.

Another video shows armored vehicles arriving at the scene.

The spokesman previously stressed that resources were deployed to deal with any potential threat, but that did not necessarily mean there was a bomb.

The official Twitter page for Kennedy Airport earlier acknowledged a “security incident” at Terminal 4, saying the arrivals and departures levels remained closed to inbound traffic.

“Please expect traffic delays and allow extra travel time,” the account tweeted.
