Two people were killed and several others wounded late Saturday in a northeast Texas town after police said a man with a rifle and a “battle belt” opened fire. Three officers were shot in the confrontation with the gunman, and another person suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Haltom police said. The shooter, who has not been identified, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. He was found with a military-style rifle and a handgun after police said a man and woman were shot in the area. The chaotic scene unfolded in the Diamond Oaks section of town, where police urged residents to stay indoors as they searched for the armed suspect after reports of shots fired. It is still unclear what led to the shooting, which prompted multiple different law enforcement agencies to descend on the area. According to The Dallas Morning News, as the search for the shooter was still ongoing, a police officer told residents gathered in the area near Denton Freeway and Glenview Drive to “please leave” because there was an “active shooter”. “He is armed. Please leave for your own safety. Please leave. He has already shot many people,” said the unnamed officer.
