Charges are pending against a man who dragged a Calgary firefighter in a stolen car while trying to flee a crash on the city’s northwest side, the Calgary Police Service said in a release Saturday.
Police were called to a one-vehicle crash in the 100 block of Bermuda Drive NW in the Beddington Heights neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. While assisting at the scene of the crash, a firefighter was pulled from the car as the driver attempted to flee.
A police helicopter was dispatched to observe the car from a safe distance “due to the high-risk nature of the suspect’s driving,” police said. The firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
“In incidents like these, our priority is always to ensure public safety first,” says the duty inspector. Jeff Pennoyer of the CPS Real Time Operations Center.
“The driver demonstrated little regard for the safety of both the public and our fellow first responders, and as such we have committed resources from across the service to safely resolve this incident.”
The man was taken into custody and investigators confirmed the car was stolen.
The investigation continues.
