After Australian pop culture blog poptopic.com.au published a story last month headlined “Johnny Depp $301 million Disney deal revealed?!” the die-hard Snopes team smelled something odd and went in to investigate.

The rumor, which has reportedly been shared on Reddit, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter, claims that Depp, fresh off a mostly victorious defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard, has received a huge sum of money from The Walt Disney Studios again will star in his Pirates of the Caribbean movie character, Jack Sparrow.
“However, we have yet to find any evidence that a deal for any amount of money is in the works between Depp and Disney.”
